Motherhood & Love in the time of Covid-19

Motherhood & Love in the time of Covid-19

I am so moved by the power and force of motherhood, especially during these uncertain times!

I was very touched this week, seeing photos of my sister visiting her oldest son for his birthday in Ontario. He turned 39 this week and lives in a group home as he has intellectual and physical disabilities. The home has been under lockdown since COVID-19 started and it has been a challenge to get the residents of the group home to understand COVID-19, self-isolation and changing routines etc. Also, unfortunately, COVID-19 went through the group home, but thankfully, everyone is healthy again!

My sister and her husband moved close to his home a few years ago, so she could visit him at least three days a week. Before the Pandemic, she would take him out regularly to go shopping, to dinner, or movies etc. but since COVID-19, she has had to come up with other ways to connect and see her boy.  She has been venturing out of self-isolation to go stand by his window (tears in my eyes) and has regularly dropped off bags of treats for everyone at the home to share! She never stopped going!

On his birthday, she and a few other members of her family visited him through the window and dropped off presents. She told me that he loves the pillow he got from his brother and the kid’s toy cell phone she bought him. The staff, who have been fantastic (more tears in my eyes), told her that he pretends to call her everyday on the toy phone and pretends he is talking with her.

During these uncertain times, we all have learned to adapt; the power of love and connection will always find a way!
